Abstract
In communicable diseases, Siddha formulations are found to act in two ways – one is directly acting against the causative organisms of disease and the other is to prepare the body’s immune system to cope with the invaders. Ancient times, man survived through many diseases and outbreaks with their own ethno-medicines. 2020 is a year of pandemic, the whole world suffers from a pandemic disease called COVID-19, and it was started in Wuhan city, China, in December 2019. It has emerged as an outbreak of unexplained pneumonia, later on Feb 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) named this pneumonia disease as Corona virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) caused by a new member of coronavirus family – SARS-CoV-2. Coronaviruses (CoVs) represent a major group of viruses mostly affecting human beings through zoonotic transmission. The most common symptoms at illness onset are fever (99%), fatigue (70%), dry cough (60%), myalgia (44%) and dyspnea. This disease spreads through nasal discharge and salivary droplets. This infection is usually mild in Children and young adults, whereas in old people and those with co-morbidities like diabetes, blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases develop severe illness, even death. Numerous studies on the pharmacological aspects of Siddha medicines containing medicinal plants as ingredients have been accomplished, since they have always been a potential source for the production of new medicines and may enhance the effects of conventional antiviral drugs, which will probably decrease costs, improve the treatment quality and provide better treatment outcomes. Arathai Kudineer Chooranam is one among such medicines generally used for treating respiratory and digestive complaints of Kapha imbalance, cough with sputum, headache, fever and painful joints and swelling. Arathai Kudineer Chooranam is available in the market in coarse powdered form. It consists of totally twelve active ingredients in equal proportions apart from Sitrarathai (Alpinia officinarum Hance.) which is the chief ingredient of this formulation, after which the medicine is named. This review provides an insight into Pandemic in Siddha system and its management in both ancient history and modern history. The aim of this article is to bring out the ethnopharmacological aspects of the drug in this formulation.
