Abstract
Medicinal plants have been an integral part of human health care since
prehistoric times. Traditional systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM), Unani, and Indigenous healing rely extensively on plant
resources for treating various ailments. With the increase in antibiotic
resistance and side-effects of synthetic drugs, medicinal plants are gaining
renewed interest in modern pharmacology. This paper provides a comprehensive
review of the significance of medicinal plants, their phytochemical
constituents, traditional usage patterns, conservation issues, and contemporary
research validating their therapeutic potential. It also discusses challenges
faced in commercialization and sustainable utilization. The study highlights
that medicinal plants offer a promising reservoir for novel therapeutic agents
while emphasizing the need for validation, standardization, and conservation.
