Hirda (Terminalia chebula): A medicinal plant with nutritional and therapeutical importance

Abstract
Medicinal plants have been an integral part of human healthcare systems since ancient times. Among them, Terminalia chebula, commonly known as Hirda or Haritaki, occupies a significant position in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda. The present paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the nutritional composition, phytochemical constituents, and therapeutic potential of Terminalia chebula. The plant is rich in bioactive compounds such as tannins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, which contribute to its diverse pharmacological activities including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effects. This study highlights both traditional uses and modern scientific findings, emphasizing its importance as a potential natural therapeutic agent. The paper concludes that T. chebula is a valuable medicinal plant with promising applications in preventive and curative healthcare.
