Abstract
Salinity is an important abiotic stress that
adversely affects rice growth and productivity. The present study aimed to
screen 42 traditional rice varieties (TRVs) for salinity tolerance using
morphological traits and to evaluate the RM3412 marker associated with the
Saltol region. Seedlings were grown hydroponically for 30 days and exposed to
2500 ppm NaCl. Root length, shoot length, leaf length, leaf width, number of
leaves, number of dry leaves and dry-leaf percentage were assessed. Six
varieties (TRV-5, TRV-9, TRV-17, TRV-18, TRV-23 and TRV-26) showed
comparatively greater tolerance based on the evaluated traits. The six selected
varieties were screened with RM3412, and the expected approximately 211-bp
product was observed in five varieties. These traditional rice varieties
represent promising genetic resources for further validation and breeding for
saline environments.
